John Lewis Store, Exeter
We provided scaffold design services for the John Lewis store in Exeter, delivering a full perimeter access scaffold to facilitate high-level re-cladding works. The objective was to achieve safe, continuous access around the façade while maintaining stability and buildability on a constrained retail site.
A key challenge was the need for the scaffold to span between the existing primary structure across most elevations. Our design approach focused on establishing clear load paths back into suitable support points, with details developed to suit the building interfaces and the re-cladding sequence.
On one elevation, the roof below could not safely sustain the scaffold loads, so we engineered a cantilever arrangement from the main roof. This required careful consideration of global stability, local connection detailing, and the transfer of vertical and lateral actions into the stronger structural elements.
The final package included GA drawings, key details, and supporting calculations (TEDDS/SCIA where appropriate), confirming compliance and giving the erection team clear information for safe installation and use throughout the works.
