Free-Standing Access Scaffold and Temporary Roof

DH Scaffold Services Ltd was appointed to design a free-standing access scaffold and temporary roof for a residential property undergoing full refurbishment. The brief combined continuous access around the building with temporary weather protection to support roofing and external works.

The challenge

The scaffold and temporary roof needed to remain stable without relying on ties into the property. This required the complete arrangement to be considered together, including the effects of wind on the roof and the transfer of forces through the supporting scaffold.

The design needed to address uplift and lateral forces alongside the loads associated with the working platforms and roof structure. Weather protection was an important project requirement, although working activities remained subject to suitable conditions and the design’s operational limits.

Our design response

DH developed a free-standing arrangement with defined load paths, longitudinal and transverse bracing, and associated ballast or anchorage provisions. The engineering assessment considered how these elements worked together to provide stability without restraint from the residential building.

Our design package included general arrangement drawings, relevant support and restraint details, and supporting calculations. These communicated the scaffold configuration and the engineering requirements for the temporary roof and access arrangement.

We also arranged aerial photography and video of the completed scaffold through Aerisurv Ltd, acting as a separate specialist provider. The footage was edited into a short project video to support the client’s records and showcase the refurbishment progress.

The project demonstrates our experience of designing free-standing temporary roof schemes where access, weather protection and structural stability must be provided without tying into the building.
