Free-standing Temporary Roof

DH Scaffold Services Ltd was appointed to design a free-standing system temporary roof serving the North East wing of the main house at Castle Howard.

The challenge

The project’s heritage constraints meant that the scaffold could not be tied to the Grade I listed building for restraint. This was a fundamental consideration in developing the temporary roof’s supporting arrangement.

Our design response

DH Scaffold Services Ltd designed a free-standing solution to accommodate this restriction. The design needed to provide stability without relying on scaffold ties to the historic building, making the roof and its supporting scaffold arrangement central to the engineering approach.

The project demonstrates our experience of designing temporary roof structures around the constraints of heritage buildings, where the available means of support and restraint must be considered from the outset.
