What changes between the temporary works checking categories - and why the required level of independence matters.

Scope: Simple designs produced using conventional analysis methods and recognised standards, technical guidance or supplier information.
Typical scaffold example: A straightforward bespoke scaffold design with clearly defined loading, geometry, ties and foundations.
Check method: Review the design assumptions, drawings and calculations to confirm compliance with the design brief and relevant standards.

DesScope: Designs involving greater complexity or a considerable degree of engineering interpretation—for example, interpretation of loading, foundations, structural behaviour or site interfaces.
Typical scaffold example: A scaffold involving more complex geometry, load paths, ties, sheeting, foundations or interaction with other temporary or permanent works.
Check method: An independent analytical check based on the design brief, drawings, assumptions and relevant design information, normally undertaken without relying on the original designer’s calculations.
Checker: A competent engineer who was not involved in, or consulted during, the original design. They may be from the same organisation where genuine independence is maintained and the applicable procedure permits it.cription text goes here

Scope: Complex, unusual or innovative designs, including those involving significant departures from recognised standards, novel analysis, complex construction sequences or considerable engineering judgement.
Typical scaffold example: An unusual scaffold or temporary-works arrangement involving novel structural behaviour, significant departures from established guidance or particularly complex erection and loading stages.
Check method: A fully independent design check based on the agreed design brief and relevant design information, using an independent analytical approach.
